Devastating floods have swept through parts of Tureta Local Government Area in Sokoto State, destroying more than 50 houses, submerging farmlands, and displacing scores of residents.
The flooding, which followed hours of torrential rainfall on Wednesday night, also wreaked havoc on market stalls and local businesses, leaving a trail of destruction and sparking urgent calls for government intervention.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Chairman of Tureta LGA, Malam Kabiru Tureta, described the situation as “deeply troubling,” noting the heavy toll on residents’ livelihoods.
“Our people have lost homes, crops, and sources of income. We are awaiting a full assessment to guide the necessary emergency response,” he stated.
Preliminary findings indicate that the affected areas suffered significant structural damage, with families forced to seek shelter in nearby communities or makeshift camps.
Local farmers also reported the complete loss of their crops, raising fears of food shortages and economic hardship in the coming weeks.
Authorities are expected to launch a comprehensive damage assessment in the days ahead to determine the full scale of the disaster and coordinate relief operations.
Meanwhile, affected residents have appealed to the Sokoto State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other humanitarian agencies to provide immediate support, including shelter materials, food, and medical aid.
The latest disaster underscores the growing threat of climate-induced flooding in Nigeria’s northern states, with experts warning of the need for improved drainage systems and proactive disaster preparedness.
