A large fire broke out at the Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State, spreading quickly from an industrial facility to surrounding residential areas and causing panic among residents.
Videos shared online showed thick black smoke rising into the air as fierce flames consumed parts of the factory complex within the free trade zone. The fire attracted the attention of nearby residents, many of whom were seen fleeing their homes as the blaze moved closer to residential buildings.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene as residents hurriedly evacuated the area. The situation remained tense as firefighters worked to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading further into nearby communities.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of the fire, and there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries. However, residents told Vanguard that the incident started in the early hours of the day and was suspected to have been caused by a gas explosion at a foam-producing company inside the industrial park.
The fire reportedly grew rapidly before emergency teams could bring it under control, leading to damage to several houses located close to the industrial zone.
Confirming the incident, the Director of the Ogun State Fire Service, Fatai Adefala, said firefighters had been battling the blaze for hours. “The state firefighters’ team from Agbara and Ota have been on the ground doing the needful for over three hours,” he said during a telephone conversation.
Efforts to fully extinguish the fire and assess the level of damage continued as residents awaited further updates from emergency officials.
