Final Candidate List Out as Anambra Gears Up for Governorship Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Wednesday, confirming that political parties can begin their campaigns on June 11, 2025.

The list includes candidates from sixteen political parties that met the deadline to submit their candidate forms. Each party had until 6 p.m. on May 12 to upload their nominees’ personal details, as required by INEC rules.

This followed an earlier step where the commission published the personal particulars of candidates selected during party primaries.

INEC stated that political parties were allowed to make changes to their candidate list if a candidate withdrew voluntarily.

In line with this rule, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) organized a new primary to replace its governorship candidate.

Four other parties — Accord, African Action Congress (AAC), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) — changed their deputy governorship candidates ahead of the June 2 deadline for substitutions.

Among the parties contesting, two have nominated women as their governorship candidates: the African Action Congress and the National Rescue Movement (NRM). Additionally, six parties chose female running mates.

These include Accord, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Boot Party, Labour Party, and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

No party nominated any person with a disability as either a candidate or running mate.

The ages of candidates on the list range from 36 to 71 years.

With the final list now published, INEC said no more replacements or withdrawals will be allowed unless a candidate or running mate dies before the election, as stated in the Electoral Act.
