The Federal Government has set a 2027 target for the complete adoption of computer-based testing (CBT) for all examinations in the country.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during the inauguration of the Committee on the Improvement of Quality Examinations in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Thursday.
Dr Alausa detailed the committee’s mandate, which includes tackling critical challenges in the education sector, standardising examination procedures, and ensuring fairness and quality in assessments nationwide.
He reaffirmed the government’s determination to combat examination malpractices and enhance the integrity of the nation’s educational evaluation system.
Acknowledging the complexity of examination fraud, the minister highlighted the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the issue. He noted that students are not the sole culprits, as parents, teachers, school principals, and exam supervisors often play roles in perpetuating the problem.
“Addressing exam leakages and malpractices requires a collective effort,” Dr Alausa stated, pointing out that some parents encourage cheating while certain educators and supervisors exacerbate the issue.
He underscored the importance of technology in meeting the 2027 deadline, saying, “Our goal is to ensure that by 2027, all our examinations will be computer-based. Technology is key to achieving this aim.”
The committee will also focus on eliminating candidate swapping and other local malpractices to foster a more transparent and efficient examination system.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision to modernise Nigeria’s education system and safeguard the credibility of its examination processes.
