The Federal Government is taking steps to resolve the rising cost of onions in Nigerian markets.
This follows reports of a potential 40% drop in onion production due to farmers receiving low-quality seeds.
On Monday, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, met with the National Onion Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) to address the situation.
Investigations revealed that a NOPPMAN member distributed the substandard seeds, leading to the current crisis.
The government is working to provide quality seeds and fertilizers to affected farmers immediately. Plans are also in place to build modern storage facilities to prevent spoilage and maintain steady supplies.
In addition, measures like using rice straws for packaging and improving cold storage methods were discussed to improve onion preservation.
Warehouses will also store the current harvest for better distribution and to ease market prices.
These actions aim to stabilize the onion supply and bring relief to consumers in the coming months.
