In a strong rebuttal to a recent report published on June 16, 2025, by an online news medium in Nigeria, the families and legal representatives of six young Nigerians arrested in connection with an alleged case of police extortion have issued a statement categorically denying the claims made in the article. The original story alleged that the Nigeria Police Force extorted ₦700,000 from the families of the detainees, raising serious concerns about police brutality and human rights abuses.
The statement, signed by Barrister Babs Iwalokun and the parents of the accused—Mr. Abubakar Kure, Mrs. Emmanuel Joy, Mrs. Yunusa Aishatu, Mrs. Halima Yahaya, Mr. Ibrahim Yunusa, and Mr. Moses Okwe—described the allegations as “false, misleading, and completely untrue.” They clarified that at no point did any police officer or personnel demand or receive the alleged sum from them or on their behalf.
“We did not authorise, support, or participate in the publication of the said report, which we consider defamatory and damaging to the image of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read. The families expressed their regret for any confusion or harm the false report may have caused and urged the public to disregard the misleading information circulating online.
The parents also expressed their appreciation for the professionalism demonstrated by the officers involved in the case, emphasising their commitment to due process and truth. “We dissociate ourselves from any individual or group attempting to use this case to promote false narratives or incite public sentiment,” they stated.
The six young men—Emmanuel David, Yunusa Habeeb, Moses Okwe, Abdulazeez Abduhamid, Kure Mustapha, and Dalandi Inuwa Mustapha—were arrested in Kubwa on June 4, 2025, while returning from a birthday party. While the initial report highlighted concerns regarding arbitrary arrests and denial of legal representation, the families are adamant that due process is being followed in their case.
As the matter progresses, the families are calling for transparency and a fair examination of the facts, emphasising the importance of upholding justice and the rule of law.
