Ex-LG Chairman, Four Others Killed Over Land Dispute

Suspected bandits launched a violent attack on Morai village in Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Monday, April 15, leaving five people dead, including a former sole administrator of the local government, Hon. Saminu Suleiman Morai.

The armed assailants reportedly stormed the village in the early hours, laying siege from around 1:00 a.m. to 3:25 a.m., during which several residents were held hostage. Members of the late Morai’s household were among those abducted in the assault.

One of the other victims was Alhaji Akilu Liman, a former councillor who served under Morai’s administration.

According to security expert Zagazola Makama, intelligence reports indicate that the attack was orchestrated by a terrorist group based in Bayan Ruwa, Maradun LGA. The group was allegedly invited by individuals from the Jandutsi Fulani community to retaliate over a land allocation dispute.

Makama revealed that the bandits were reacting to the alleged sale of grazing lands in the Jandutsi forest to Hausa farmers by officials of the Talata-Mafara council. The land was reportedly sold at N50,000 per plot, an act that has sparked accusations of corruption and inflamed already tense relations between Fulani herders and Hausa farmers.

“The attack was seen as a form of retaliation by the Fulani community, who claim that the land sale robbed them of essential grazing routes,” Makama said.

The killings have provoked widespread condemnation and calls for a full investigation into the disputed land deals and the motive behind the retaliatory violence. Many residents and observers see the tragedy as a reflection of deeper issues tied to land conflicts, ethnic divisions, and alleged abuse of public office.
