The European Union has strongly criticized the continued detention of Kano-based singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, stating that Sharia blasphemy laws violate international human rights and often incite violence and mob attacks.
According to NAN In a resolution (2025/2548(RSP)), the EU urged Nigerian authorities to release Sharif-Aminu unconditionally and drop all charges against him.
“The Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, drop all charges against him, and ensure his safety and right to due process,” the resolution stated.
The EU further emphasized that Nigeria’s blasphemy laws contradict its obligations under international human rights agreements, the African Charter, and the Nigerian Constitution. It also noted that blasphemy accusations frequently lead to persecution, violence, and extrajudicial killings.
Sharif-Aminu has remained in detention since 2020 after being accused of blasphemy.
