Manchester United have reportedly started discussions with the representatives of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as they look to strengthen their attack for the upcoming season.
According to football journalist Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, Osimhen has been in excellent form at Galatasaray this season. The 26-year-old forward, on loan from Napoli, has scored 33 goals and provided 8 assists in 37 matches across all competitions.
Despite his strong performance in Turkey, a permanent move to Galatasaray seems unlikely due to financial challenges at the club.
“Although it now seems unlikely that he will stay in Turkey, the Nigerian striker is attracting strong interest from the Premier League. Conveniently, Manchester United are seriously considering him for next season and have already held talks with his representatives,” the report said.
Osimhen, who hails from Lagos, has also drawn interest from the Saudi Pro League. Last summer, Al Hilal reportedly made a €50 million offer, but the deal didn’t go through. Now, Saudi club Neom is said to be interested, although the striker appears more focused on joining a Premier League side.
However, signing Osimhen may be costly. Reports say he is asking for a salary of €12 million per year, a figure only a few Premier League clubs can afford.
Manchester United, currently not satisfied with their attacking options, see Osimhen as a backup plan if they are unable to sign their top target, Victor Gyökeres. Ipswich striker Liam Delap is also on their radar.
Although Osimhen is still under contract with Napoli, a move could happen if United are ready to meet the Italian club’s transfer fee, which could be more than €75 million including bonuses.
