The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed plans to challenge the ruling of a Federal High Court in Lagos that acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of money laundering charges.
The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, freed Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, of all 11 charges brought against them. The EFCC had accused them of laundering N6.9 billion.
Originally filed in July 2019, the case alleged financial misconduct during Fayose’s tenure in office. However, the court dismissed all charges, finding no sufficient evidence to support the claims.
Following the ruling, the EFCC issued a statement through its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stating that the commission is reviewing the court’s decision and has begun the process of filing an appeal.
“In light of the verdict delivered by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke discharging Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the Commission is assessing the judgment and will initiate the appeal process,” the EFCC said.
The commission also reiterated its commitment to due process and legal redress in its pursuit of justice.
Fayose, who held office from 2003 to 2007 and again between 2014 and 2018, has consistently denied any involvement in financial wrongdoing throughout the trial.
