The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 35 people suspected of internet fraud in Auchi, Edo State.
The arrests were carried out on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, at different locations in the town, including Vigilante Street, off Sabo Ibenafo Road, and the Back of Yak area.
In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the EFCC said the operation was based on “credible intelligence that linked [the suspects] to fraudulent internet activities.”
The anti-corruption agency restated its commitment to fighting cybercrime, saying, “We remain resolute in our mandate to rid Nigeria of economic and financial crimes.”
Items recovered from the suspects include nine cars, eleven laptops, 46 mobile phones, and two smart watches. These are believed to have been used to carry out the alleged online scams.
The suspects are now in EFCC custody and are being investigated. The agency confirmed that they will be charged to court once investigations are completed.
Auchi has been identified as one of the key areas where internet fraud, commonly called “Yahoo Yahoo,” is on the rise. This has led to increased security monitoring by the EFCC in the area.
The commission urged the public to report suspicious activities and continue supporting the fight against economic and financial crimes.
