The election petitions tribunal sitting in Benin City, the Edo State capital, has been relocated to Abuja to continue its proceedings due to security concerns.
The Tribunal Secretary, Muazu Bagudu, confirmed this development on Friday, 24 January 2025, during court proceedings.
According to a report by Daily Post, a statement signed by the secretary revealed that the relocation would take effect from Monday, 27 January 2025.
The statement read: “I am directed to notify all parties that the governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State has been relocated to Abuja at National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja effective from Monday, January 27, 2025.
“For further inquiry, contact the secretary.”
Bagudu announced the decision shortly after the data forensic expert called by the petitioners, Dr Asue Ighodalo, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), testified before the court.
It was further disclosed that the President of the Court of Appeal ordered the relocation.
A source close to the court, who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributed the move to security challenges at the tribunal premises on Sapele Road, Benin City.
