Edo Governorship Tribunal Begins Hearing

The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has commenced pre-hearing sessions to deliberate on multiple petitions challenging Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory in the September 21 election.

Seven petitions have been filed, contesting the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Okpebholo as the winner. Among the petitioners are the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who finished second in the election. Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata, who came third, is also among those seeking to overturn the results announced by INEC on September 22.

The petitions allege significant irregularities and procedural flaws during the election, which the claimants argue impacted the final outcome. The tribunal will now assess the merits of these allegations to determine the governor’s political fate.
