A 19-year-old Nigerian student, Marvellous Ugochukwu, has been confirmed dead after a truck rammed into a bus shelter in Regina, Canada, on October 12, 2025.
According to reports, Marvellous, who came to Canada as an international student — was waiting for a bus on Dewdney Avenue near Elphinstone Street when a white freight truck veered off the road and crashed into the shelter. The impact was so severe that it toppled a utility pole.
She was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Her elder sister, Miracle Ugochukwu, who also studies in Regina, said the tragic incident has left her devastated. “I don’t think I can accept it yet,” Miracle said, adding that she has not been able to return to the house they both shared.
Marvellous had arrived in Canada in 2023 with dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon. Her sister described her as a brilliant student who consistently ranked among the top of her class back in Nigeria.
“She was smart and hardworking. We were all so proud of her,” Miracle said tearfully.
Due to financial constraints, Marvellous had temporarily paused her studies at the University of Regina and was working at a restaurant to save money for her tuition.
“She wanted to go back to school. That was her biggest dream,” Miracle said.
The family, now grieving deeply, is demanding justice and answers from the Regina Police, who say the investigation is still ongoing. No charges have been announced against the truck driver as of now.
Marvellous’s aunt, Perpetual Kanu, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses.
A candlelight vigil was held at the crash site on October 19, which coincided with Miracle’s 21st birthday. Dozens of people from Regina’s Nigerian community gathered to pay tribute to Marvellous — described as “a smiling, kind-hearted young woman who loved K-pop and dreamed of saving lives.”
Through tears, Miracle placed her hand on the concrete slab where her sister once waited for the bus and whispered a promise:
“I just want justice for my sister. That’s all I need.”
