Deji Adeyanju Calls for Visa Ban on Police PRO Adejobi Over Alleged Rights Violations

By: Bayero Ade

Human rights advocate and legal practitioner, Deji Adeyanju, has formally requested the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union to impose a visa ban on Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and his family.

According to Afripost, In a petition submitted through his law firm, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, Adeyanju accused Adejobi of suppressing free speech and using his position within the Nigeria Police Force to intimidate and silence government critics.

Dated February 4, 2025, the petition cited instances where Adejobi allegedly framed criticism of the police as a criminal offence. One example referenced was a tweet from March 29, 2023, in which Adejobi reportedly stated that “insulting police officers performing their lawful duties is a criminal act under Nigerian law.”

Adeyanju listed several individuals affected by this alleged stance, including musician Habeeb Okikiola (Portable), nurse Olamide Thomas—who was detained in December 2024 for criticizing the Inspector General of Police—and Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu. Also mentioned were TikToker Destiny Ekhorutomwem, who was arrested over alleged cyberbullying, and Charles Uche Ihedioha, who was reportedly detained for a social media comment.

Furthermore, Adeyanju claimed that Adejobi has frequently justified police brutality and excessive use of force. He called on Western governments to take decisive action, emphasizing that a visa ban would serve as a strong message against human rights abuses and the suppression of free expression in Nigeria.
