The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has begun an inquiry into the deaths of two Okuama community leaders, Pa James Oghoroko and Denis Okugbaye, who passed away while in Army custody.
The Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, shared the development during a briefing in Abuja. Oghoroko, serving as the President-General of Okuama, and Okugbaye, the community’s treasurer, reportedly died within six days of each other.
Their detention stemmed from an incident in March when 17 military personnel were killed during a peace mission between Okuama and Okoloba communities.
The leaders, along with four others, were taken into custody in August as part of the investigation into the attack.
Following recent reports of their deaths, the CDS instructed the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt to carry out a detailed investigation.
Findings are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
