Court Orders Reno Omokri’s Arrest, Remand Over Alleged Defamation

A Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, has ordered the remand of Reno Omokri, a prominent social media commentator, on allegations of defamation.

According to Politics Nigeria, the court issued the remand order after Omokri, alongside former Dunamis Church pastor Abraham Daniel and two others, Enenche Enenche and Alexander Enenche, were accused of defamation. The accused are now in custody as investigations proceed.

The ruling, delivered by Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Ayanna, followed an ex-parte motion filed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, through his counsel, Francis Gabriel, on 13 January 2025. The motion, referenced ME/07/2025, listed the Inspector-General of Police as the applicant, while Omokri and the other individuals were named as respondents.

In his decision, Chief Magistrate Ayanna directed that the respondents be held in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service pending investigations. They are also mandated to appear before the court on 30 January 2025 for arraignment and possible prosecution.

The court stated: “An order of this Honourable Court for remand warrant of the Respondents: (i) Mr. Daniel Abraham, (ii) Mr. Enenche Idoga Alexander, (iii) Oboyinlo Enenche Peter, and (iv) Mr. Reno Omokri, in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service pending investigation, arraignment, and prosecution.” It further instructed that the respondents be presented in court on the specified date.

Omokri, renowned for his outspoken views on politics and religion, has often courted controversy with his remarks.
