A Lagos High Court has ruled that the Nollywood film Gang of Lagos should no longer be available for public viewing and streaming.
The verdict was given on Wednesday at Tafawa Balewa Square by Justice Idowu Alakija.
The case was filed by the Isale Eko Descendants Union and two others against Amazon Web Services and several other defendants.
They argued that the movie misrepresented the Eyo Masquerade, a cultural symbol in Lagos, and portrayed the Isale Eko community in a false and offensive manner.
The judge agreed with the complainants, stating that the film damaged the reputation of the Eyo tradition and misrepresented the peaceful nature of the Isale Eko people.
The ruling ordered the defendants to issue a formal apology to the applicants, including the Isale Eko Descendants Union.
As part of the settlement, those involved in making and distributing the movie must acknowledge that Gang of Lagos gave a wrong impression of the Eyo Masquerade and Isale Eko traditions.
The court made it clear that a written apology must be sent to the affected parties.
