The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has confirmed that Niger State has recorded 150 positive cholera cases since the outbreak began, with 16 deaths reported so far.
The Chief of UNICEF Kaduna Field Office, Dr. Gerida Birukila, disclosed this on Friday during an advocacy visit to the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Farouq Bahago. Represented by UNICEF Health Specialist, Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, Birukila revealed that over 451 suspected cholera cases have been recorded in the state, with 150 confirmed through rapid diagnostic testing.
“So far, we have recorded more than 451 suspected cases of cholera, out of which over 150 tested positive. Sixteen people have died from the disease,” she said.
UNICEF also sought the monarch’s support in addressing the outbreak and tackling other public health challenges, including polio, measles, and the low rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the state.
Dr. Tsofo explained that UNICEF is working closely with the state government to curb the spread of cholera and other preventable diseases, noting that traditional institutions have a vital role to play.
“We advocated for the Emir’s support in the upcoming polio eradication campaign, the ongoing cholera outbreak response, and the introduction of measles and rubella vaccines in October,” he stated.
Responding, the Emir of Minna pledged the emirate’s support for UNICEF’s health interventions, assuring that traditional leaders will continue to mobilise communities and complement government efforts to eradicate the diseases.
“We will work in the interest of our people and support your activities in all areas of intervention,” the monarch said.
