Catholic priest dies during tennis game in Anambra

The Catholic community in Awka, Anambra State, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Reverend Father Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who collapsed while playing lawn tennis early Monday morning.

Fr. Udogu, who was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and Dean of Awka II Deanery, was reported to have slumped during a game and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, medical efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The unfortunate incident was confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday by the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi. In the statement, the Church expressed sorrow over the unexpected loss of one of its dedicated priests.

“With hope in the resurrection, we announce the death of our brother, Rev. Fr. Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who passed away suddenly on Monday, May 19,” the statement read.

Born on December 24, 1964, Fr. Udogu was ordained a Catholic priest on August 19, 1995. He was actively serving the diocese until his death.

The Diocese extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, parish community, and all who are grieving the loss.

Funeral details will be communicated to the public in the coming days.

“May his soul find eternal rest in the Lord,” the Diocese added.
