The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned comments made by Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, the founder of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry, over his assertion that first fruit offerings can erase sins — including those committed through fraud.
In a sermon that has resurfaced online, the Warri-based preacher stated that offering one’s first income of the year to God could bring forgiveness, even for those engaged in fraudulent acts.
The video has since sparked public backlash, with religious leaders accusing Fufeyin of distorting biblical teachings.
According to the preacher, “first fruit” giving has the power to break spiritual limitations and nullify transgressions.
Drawing parallels between Jesus as God’s first fruit and monetary offerings by believers, Fufeyin told his congregation that even a known fraudster could receive divine support through such a gift.
“Even if someone is into 419, God still stands behind them when they offer their first fruit,” he said to a cheering audience.
However, CAN dismissed the message as misleading and unbiblical.
Speaking on behalf of the association, Abimbola Ayuba, the National Director for National Issues and Social Welfare, described the sermon as a theological misrepresentation.
“God cannot be manipulated. He doesn’t condone sin, nor does He receive offerings from stolen wealth,” Ayuba said.
“We don’t associate with self-proclaimed religious leaders who exploit vulnerable people under the guise of spiritual guidance.”
Ayuba emphasized that CAN only recognizes spiritual leaders who are part of its five constituent blocs and who maintain sound biblical doctrine.
The Lagos State Chairman of CAN, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, also weighed in, challenging Fufeyin to back his statements with scripture.
He warned that such teachings could mislead believers into thinking financial contributions could substitute for genuine repentance.
“He’s speaking out of context,” Adegbite said. “Let him show us in the Bible where God says giving first fruit offerings cancels sin. This kind of message encourages people to live irresponsibly, believing they can buy forgiveness.”
Prophet Fufeyin, often referred to as “Papa J,” has been at the center of various controversies in the past — including the marketing of miracle products claimed to heal medical and spiritual conditions.
In 2024, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) began probing some of these items following public complaints.
Efforts to reach Fufeyin for clarification were unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to his known mobile line received no response.
When contacted through the church’s official number, a female staff member declined to comment on the sermon, stating that only the church administration could provide an official response.
