Buratai Expresses Optimism Over Nigeria’s Security Outlook by 2027 Under Tinubu

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), has expressed confidence that Nigeria will experience significant improvements in its security situation within the next two years, crediting the anticipated progress to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking on Tuesday during a media chat at the 2025 Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum in Abuja, Buratai said the Tinubu-led government is taking steps that could yield positive outcomes in tackling insecurity across the country.

“I am optimistic that we will see substantial improvements in security under President Tinubu by 2027,” Buratai stated.

While acknowledging that crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and other forms of insecurity have deep-rooted social causes, he insisted they can still be effectively addressed through consistent efforts and strategic planning.

According to him, the experiences of the country’s security forces over the years have better equipped them to respond to evolving threats. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the armed forces, the police, and other security agencies in overcoming these challenges.

Buratai further stressed that lasting solutions to insecurity require cooperation from all tiers of government—not just the federal level.

“Tackling security issues cannot be left to the federal government alone. State and local governments must also play their parts,” he said, adding that platforms like the VON Forum help raise public awareness and encourage civic engagement.

He also emphasized the importance of building institutional capacity and strengthening the effectiveness of Nigeria’s existing defence and security policies. According to him, although comprehensive policies are already in place, real progress depends on how well these strategies are implemented.

“For any policy to work, coordination among all relevant stakeholders is essential,” Buratai noted.
