BREAKING: Vatican elects new Pope after conclave

A new leader of the Roman Catholic Church has been chosen, following the successful completion of the papal conclave at the Vatican.

On Thursday, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel—signaling that a consensus had been reached by the College of Cardinals.

The smoke indicates that a candidate secured the necessary two-thirds majority to be elected pope.

The conclave, which commenced on Wednesday, brought together 133 cardinals from various parts of the world.

This development follows the death of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88.

The newly chosen pontiff becomes the 267th pope in the history of the Catholic Church. Further details on the identity and background of the new pope are expected soon.
