In a bid to tackle the shortage of teachers in public secondary schools across Ondo State, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has approved the employment of 1,010 new teachers.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, this follows the completion of a recruitment exercise conducted by the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), which screened thousands of applicants last year.
The list of successful candidates will be published online today and displayed at TESCOM headquarters and zonal offices across the state from Tuesday. Those selected are expected to commence documentation immediately.
Last year, the governor approved the recruitment of 1,000 secondary school and 1,000 primary school teachers, leading to the ongoing employment process by TESCOM and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). While the final list for secondary school teachers has been approved, the process for primary school teachers is in its final stages.
Governor Aiyedatiwa has repeatedly expressed concern over teacher shortages, particularly in rural schools, and directed that recruitment be based on the needs of understaffed institutions.
This initiative is part of the administration’s broader efforts to improve the education sector. Recently, the governor approved N633 million for the registration of students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and also approved the upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, into a University of Agriculture and Agribusiness.
