BREAKING: Fubara Calls for Fresh LG Elections, Assigns Administrative Heads to Oversee Councils

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to organize fresh local government elections in response to recent Supreme Court rulings affecting the state’s political landscape.

In a statewide broadcast on Sunday, Fubara acknowledged that while his administration may not fully agree with the court’s verdict, it remains committed to respecting the rule of law. He stated that once the certified copies of the judgments are obtained—expected by Friday, March 7, 2025—the government will carefully examine and implement them accordingly.

As a temporary measure, he instructed the Heads of Local Government Administration to take over leadership in all 23 local government areas until new elections are conducted. Additionally, he mandated outgoing local government chairmen to hand over their responsibilities by Monday, March 3, 2025.

“Since caretaker committees are not permitted in the local government system, I am directing the Heads of Local Government Administration to oversee council affairs until RSIEC conducts fresh elections,” Fubara announced.

He urged residents to remain peaceful, assuring them that his administration is working to restore stability and continue delivering good governance.

This development comes amid growing political uncertainty in Rivers State, as stakeholders await the enforcement of the Supreme Court’s ruling and the scheduling of local government elections.
