Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly died on Thursday shortly after collapsing in his office in Yenagoa.
The incident happened around 1:30pm, prompting an immediate emergency response. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where medical personnel battled to resuscitate him.
Family sources confirmed to Newsmen that the deputy governor was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Earlier, eyewitnesses had disclosed that Ewhrudjakpo appeared in critical condition when he was hurried into the hospital’s emergency unit. A close associate said the deputy governor had been under intense pressure due to his workload, describing him as someone who “rarely rested.”
Although the exact cause of death has not been officially released, multiple medical sources suggested the incident may be linked to a cardiac-related complication.
Security operatives immediately cordoned off the hospital premises, restricting public access as senior government officials arrived to confirm the tragic development and pay their respects.
Efforts to reach his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
