Biotech Agency Reassures Nigerians Of GMO Safety

By Charles Maduka

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency has assured Nigerians that genetically modified organisms are safe for human health and the environment.

Director-General of the agency, Abdullahi Mustapha, gave the assurance in a statement on Monday, addressing public concerns and debates over GMOs which he said stem from misinformation.

Mustapha explained that the agency’s core mandate is to promote and conduct innovative research in agriculture, health, industry, environment and other strategic sectors while prioritising public welfare.

“Our top priority is the well-being of Nigerians. We will never compromise public health or safety in the pursuit of innovation,” he said.

According to him, GMOs are globally recognised as safe, having been studied for decades and subjected to rigorous international standards. He noted that no GMO product is allowed into Nigeria without the full approval of the National Biosafety Management Agency, which carries out strict risk assessments before certification.

Mustapha added that the NBRDA is intensifying efforts to educate and engage farmers, policymakers, scientists, youths and civil society about biotechnology through training programmes, community outreach, open forums and field demonstrations.

He said these initiatives are aimed at rebuilding public confidence, countering misinformation and ensuring Nigerians benefit from safe and innovative technologies.
