—Accuses Police of lack of openness
Lagos, Nigeria – In a press statement issued today, Samuel Akingboye, the first son and eldest child of the late Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, has expressed deep concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding his father’s death and the subsequent handling of the investigation.
Starnews NG reports that late Akingboye, a prominent businessman and former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, died at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos State at the age of 60. His death, initially announced as a sudden tragedy, is now being treated as possible homicide.
In his statement, Akingboye’s son detailed a series of troubling occurrences that unfolded after his father’s death on September 3, 2025. He recounted how he was informed of his father’s passing by his security detail and subsequently discovered injuries on his father’s body that contradicted the explanation given to him. “I was met with a shocking reality at the hospital that raised more questions than answers,” he stated. “The inconsistencies in the accounts provided by my stepmother and stepbrothers have only deepened my suspicion.”
Samuel further alleged that significant funds had been transferred from his father’s company account to accounts associated with his stepmother shortly after his father’s death. He also raised concerns about the removal of personal valuables from his father’s residence during a critical time. “This series of actions gave me enough reason to seek an autopsy to determine the true cause of death,” he said.
Following the autopsy request, Samuel noted that police investigations faced resistance from family members at the deceased’s residence, complicating the inquiry. He expressed frustration over delays in receiving autopsy results and the subsequent reassignment of the case to a different police unit. “It is troubling that the Commissioner of Police has not communicated the findings to me as the complainant, despite the promise of timely updates,” he added.
He urged the Inspector General of Police to take direct oversight of the investigation and called for the immediate release of the autopsy report and all relevant evidence. He emphasised the need for transparency and accountability, stating, “My father was not just a public figure; he was a human being, a patriot, a provider, and a voice for many. He deserves justice.”
The complainant appealed to the public and civil society organisations for support, urging them to remain vigilant and engaged until justice is served. “I will stand firm until the truth prevails,” he concluded
