Benue Killings, Threat to National Unity, Shehu Warns

Prominent activist and public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has raised alarm over the escalating violence in Benue State, warning that the persistent bloodshed poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s unity and stability.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Shehu decried the latest wave of killings that have swept through several communities in the state, describing the situation as “dangerous” and a major test of the country’s fragile peace.

“This situation is not just intolerable—it’s dangerous and undermines our national unity and peaceful coexistence,” he stated.

The recent attacks, believed to be reprisals, have led to multiple fatalities and forced several residents into mourning. The violence has reignited concerns over the security situation in the North-Central region and the government’s response.

Shehu called on leaders at all levels to set aside politics and act decisively to bring the crisis under control.

“It is imperative that those in leadership positions summon the courage to act swiftly and decisively. If not addressed, the crisis could have dire consequences for the country as a whole,” he warned.

His comments add to growing calls from civil society, religious leaders, and community stakeholders urging the government to prioritize lasting peace and security in Benue and across the country.
