The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced plans to shut down all polytechnic institutions nationwide on December 2, 2024, over the Federal Government’s failure to address its demands.
Abubakar Abdullah, the chairman of the Kaduna Polytechnic chapter of ASUP, stated that the union reached this decision following the government’s inaction on agreements made with its members.
He explained that the union had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on October 6, 2024, outlining critical issues affecting the polytechnic sector. However, despite the expiration of the deadline, the government has yet to meet its obligations.
“Regrettably, as we passed the deadline of this ultimatum, we are yet to see the necessary actions from the Federal Government to address these pressing demands,” Abdullah said. “The silence and inaction have left us with no option but to consider the possibility of a total shutdown of our institutions, scheduled for December 2, 2024, should our concerns remain unaddressed.”
The union emphasized that the demands are focused on resolving systemic challenges that continue to hinder the growth and progress of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
