The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has resumed academic activities after being shut down for three weeks following student protests.
The institution had initially closed its doors after students staged demonstrations in response to a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of five students and left several others injured.
In a statement issued on Monday, the university’s registrar, Rebecca Okojie, announced that the school would reopen on Tuesday, March 11, with lectures set to commence on Monday, March 17.
She explained that the decision to resume academic activities was reached during an emergency Senate meeting held on March 10.
“The Senate has approved the reopening of the university following extensive consultations and efforts to address concerns surrounding the recent road accidents,” the statement read.
The university was shut down after students, angered by the tragic accident, threatened to block the Abuja-Lokoja highway in protest. Despite interventions from the state government and appeals from the university management, the students insisted on demonstrating.
Following recommendations from security agencies, the Vice-Chancellor, in consultation with university management, made the decision to close the institution indefinitely on February 20 to prevent further escalation of the situation.
With academic activities set to resume, the university management reassured students and staff of ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures within and around the institution.
