Tension has flared in Osun State as the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of abandoning his duties and leaving the country for over two weeks without officially informing the public or transferring power to his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo, the APC, through its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, condemned the governor’s unannounced departure, describing it as “abnormal” and a sign of administrative recklessness.
“It is wrong for Governor Adeleke to disappear without notifying the citizens or the legislature. We need to know who has been running Osun in his absence,” the statement read.
The party raised concerns over a perceived leadership vacuum and queried whether the governor had constitutionally transmitted power to his deputy as required.
The APC further linked Adeleke’s absence to his earlier alleged failed defection bid to the opposition party, describing the situation as suspicious and lacking in transparency. “Questions about Adeleke’s whereabouts have become widespread in public places, motor parks, and commercial buses across the state,” the statement added.
In a swift response, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed that the governor travelled to the United States to attend the wedding of his nephew, Afrobeat superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
Rasheed, in a statement also released on Tuesday, dismissed the APC’s allegations as mere political mischief aimed at misleading the public.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria via the family’s private jet a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” Rasheed said.
He noted that since assuming office in November 2022, the governor had not taken any formal vacation and emphasized that the current trip was brief and necessary.
Rasheed also assured the public that Governor Adeleke remains in regular contact with his deputy, who is overseeing the affairs of the state in his absence. He further extended an invitation to the APC to join the wedding celebrations either in person or virtually.
“The governor has again chosen to make this trip a short one so that he can return promptly to attend to crucial state functions,” he added.
