The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old woman, identified as Okonkwo Onyinye, over her alleged involvement in a ₦24 million robbery and kidnap case in the state.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, said Onyinye was apprehended by operatives attached to the 33 Police Station, in collaboration with Agunechemba Security, Nkwelle-Ezunaka Unit, during a coordinated operation in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to Ikenga, the suspect was arrested after security operatives recovered a Toyota Highlander SUV that was reportedly snatched from a victim in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
He explained that the victim was ambushed and double-crossed by five armed men operating in a Toyota Corolla at Nkwelle GRA Gate, where they forcibly placed him in the boot of his vehicle and drove him into a bush in Umuoji Town.
“The suspects dispossessed the victim of his phone and transferred the sum of ₦24 million from his account before abandoning him and escaping with his vehicle,” the statement read in part.
Following a distress report, the joint security team, acting on intelligence-driven operations, traced the suspects to Nawfia and later to Ogidi, where they were engaged in a gun duel. The hoodlums reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind the stolen vehicle.
“The white Toyota Highlander with registration number RBC 649 CN was recovered, while the female accomplice, Okonkwo Onyinye, was arrested at the scene,” Ikenga said, adding that the suspect was providing useful information to aid in the arrest of other fleeing gang members.
The police spokesperson noted that patrols have been intensified across the state ahead of the Anambra Governorship Election slated for November 8, 2025, to ensure safety and security of residents.
He added that further details on the ongoing investigation would be communicated to the public as developments unfold.
Earlier, it was reported that the Anambra Police Command had repelled an armed robbery attack in Ezinifite Community, Nnewi South Local Government Area, on Monday. One of the attackers was neutralised during a gun exchange with a joint police and vigilante team, while others escaped with bullet injuries.
