Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said he never considered leaving his position over the sexual harassment accusation made by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
He made this clear during Thursday’s plenary session while responding to a vote of confidence in him by the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele. The session was held at the National Assembly in Abuja, and it gave Akpabio the chance to address concerns surrounding the matter.
Bamidele had spoken in support of Akpabio, noting that many critics believed the Senate President would have been pressured to resign due to the accusation. Instead, the vote showed continued backing from his colleagues in the Senate.
In his reaction, Akpabio dismissed any idea of stepping aside, insisting that the allegations against him were false. He compared his situation to cases in other countries where people were wrongly accused and later cleared, pointing out that he has no intention of giving in to untrue claims.
He also told the Senate that anyone expecting him to leave office would be disappointed. According to him, there is no reason to step down when there is no proof backing the allegation.
The sexual harassment claim had caused public attention in recent weeks, especially as it involved two well-known political figures. However, with the Senate showing support for Akpabio, it appears he plans to continue in his role without interruption.
