Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu has revealed that Abia State will introduce a policy making Igbo language mandatory in schools.
This decision aims to preserve the language from fading away.
Emetu shared this during the closing ceremony of the Ekere Mgba Akpauche, an Igbo-themed competition hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Aba. He stated that the state government is focused on promoting Igbo as a core subject in education, calling for South-East Governors to prioritize its inclusion at all educational levels.
He expressed concern that English had overtaken Igbo, risking its extinction. Emetu also acknowledged the efforts of the Catholic Diocese of Aba and other groups in supporting the language but criticized Igbo parents for not speaking it at home.
Bishop Rt. Rev. Augustine Echema commended the government’s support and praised Rev. Fr. Onyinye Anaeto for organizing the event.
