Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, staged a protest in solidarity with their colleagues across the country over the Federal Government’s refusal to sign the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement.
The protest, which took place on the institution’s campus, disrupted academic activities as members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) vowed not to relent until the government acted on the agreement.
Speaking during the demonstration, the Chairman of ASUU-AAUA, Comrade Boluwaji Oshodi, warned that the Federal Government should be blamed if another round of crisis erupts in public universities.
He said, “All we are talking about now is just signing so that we move forward. It is about collective bargaining. This agreement has been drafted, it has been reached by a committee properly constituted by the federal government. So we don’t understand what is going on and we have done virtually everything.
“If you must know, the union is a very peaceful union. Before the union decides to go on anything like this, every avenue for reconciliation must have been exhausted.”
Oshodi explained that the union had exhausted all means of dialogue since February 2025 when the renegotiated agreement was concluded.
He maintained that the protest was meant to draw the attention of Nigerians to what he described as a looming danger in the education sector, adding that the union’s only demand was for the Federal Government to sign the agreement without further delay.
