…Says We Won’t Reward Incompetence With Re-election
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former spokesperson for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s campaign organisation during the Ondo State governorship election, Barrister Banji Okunomo, has declared that there will be no automatic ticket for candidates banking on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s popularity to win elections in 2027.
Okunomo, popularly known as BBO, emphasised that candidates seeking re-election under the APC platform will be assessed strictly based on their previous performances and not by riding on the president’s political influence.
The legal practitioner, in a statement made available to journalists, admonished elected officials to prioritise service delivery and development in their constituencies rather than depend on media propaganda to curry favour with the electorate.
He stated, “We will not allow them to just go to Abuja and get tickets, then come home here to take advantage of the winning ticket of our performing president. We will not allow anybody to deceive the people with poor representation. We will ensure stewardship of every member of the National Assembly representing us in our state.”
Okunomo, who noted that while some lawmakers have been performing credibly, others have been engaging in misleading publicity, cautioned against the use of social media to cover up poor legislative records.
“We will not allow for cheap media propaganda, most especially on social media. I’m not saying that all the National Assembly members are not performing. Some of them are doing well, but some are not doing right. All they do is engage media providers, because it’s now cheap to engage one or two and have them on the ground.”
He observed that some lawmakers have already commenced underground campaigns for second term bids, with social media awash with exaggerated claims and propaganda. Okunomo insisted that only measurable performance will determine re-election chances.
“Already, I can see preparations for second term is on as the media is awash with all kinds of propaganda. We want to measure performances,” he stated.
Reaffirming that his views align with the stand of Governor Aiyedatiwa, he added, “As the spokesperson for Mr. Governor during the election, I know his position can’t be different from this. This is the voice of the people — Vox Populi, Vox Dei — and I need to say this without any fear of contradiction.”
