The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure victory in the 2027 presidential election regardless of who becomes chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, stated this in an interview with The Sun, insisting that the APC is prepared to mobilise its members nationwide to ensure Tinubu’s re-election.
The tenure of the current INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, is expected to end this year, with reports indicating that a replacement is already being considered.
Reacting to speculations that the ruling party might influence the choice of Yakubu’s successor, Basiru dismissed the claim, stressing that the responsibility rests with civil society groups and lawmakers.
“How can you be asking a player to recommend a referee? We are players and don’t care about which referee was brought to officiate the match,” he said.
According to him, the APC is more focused on grassroots mobilisation than the identity of the electoral umpire.
“In fact, by the time we mobilise, even if the new chairman of INEC is the father of the presidential candidate of another party, Asiwaju will still win the election,” Basiru declared.
