Leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo South have written an open letter to the National leaders of the party through the National Chairman, prince Uche Secondus, and copied Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to explain why the PDP may lose this year’s governorship election in Ondo State if the party’s candidate does not emerge from the Southern Senatorial District of the state.

The open letter was signed by Hon. Bitire Solomon, a former Local government party chairman and chairman of chairmen of PDP in Ondo State, in conjunction with High Chief Daisi Mafimisebi, a former local government PDP chairman in Ondo State, on behalf of themselves and leaders of PDP in Ondo South of Ondo State.

Dear Sir,

An Open Letter To The National Leadership of PDP Over This Year Governorship Election In Ondo State

We, the undersigned are dedicated party leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State.

After careful assessment of the chances of our party to win the coming election, we are disturbed that if urgent steps are not immediately taken by the party’s leadership to avert ugly occurrence, Godforbid, the governorship election result may go the way of Kogi and Bayelsa states respectively.

This open letter is premised on the following observations:

1. The wining formula for the PDP in the coming gubernatorial election in Ondo State is for the Party’s candidate to emerge from the Southern Senatorial District of the state.
2. The assertion is the current belief of everyone in Ondo State that it is the turn of Ondo South Senatorial district since the outgoing governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is from the northern part of the state while his predecessor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, the longest serving governor (8 years ) in the history of Ondo State, hails from the Central Senatorial District of Ondo State.

Kindly see below how the governorship of Ondo state has rotated among the three Senatorial Districts from 1999 till date.

1999 – 2003:
Chief Adebayo Adefarati (Ondo North)
4 years

Dr. Olusegun Agagu ( Ondo South)
2003 – 2009
6 years

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo Central)
2009 – 2017
8 years

Barr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (Ondo North )
2017 till 2021 (outgoing )
4 years

3. It has been carefully observed that since 1999, the electorates in Ondo State have never supported or voted into power any political party that tried to sacrifice the turn of one Senatorial District for another.

4. The recent ugly experience happened in 2017 when the then governor of Ondo state, Dr. Mimiko tried to alter the rule by imposing his kinsman, Barr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) from the same district, after 8 years of uninterrupted tenure, as the flag bearer of the party – a development that spelled doom on the PDP in Ondo State which consequently led the party to abysmal failure in 2016 Ondo State governorship election.

We now pray the leadership of the party to rise for Ondo State PDP to pick the candidate of the party from the favoured zone (Ondo South ) ahead of this year’s gubernatorial election to avoid a repeat of what happened in Ondo State in 2016, and that of Bayelsa which happened recently.

We also pray the leadership of the party at the National Level not to allow itself to be used as instrument to disrupt the political culture and tradition of Ondo State electorates.
