18 Burnt, 11 Vehicles Destroyed in Enugu Road Crash Caused by Tanker Brake Failure

A tragic road accident occurred in Enugu State on Saturday, January 25, involving 31 people and 17 vehicles, including a petroleum-laden tanker, a water tanker, 15 other vehicles, and one tricycle.

As reported by NAN, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash was caused by brake failure in the tanker, which caused it to collide with the other vehicles, resulting in a fire that left 11 vehicles destroyed.

The FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, reported that 13 people were rescued, with 10 sustaining various injuries and 3 escaping unscathed. Unfortunately, 18 victims perished in the blaze, with their bodies burned beyond recognition.

The rescue operation involved various state officials, including Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, and representatives from the Ministry of Transportation, Health, and the police. Efforts to clear the wreckage and ensure smooth traffic flow are ongoing, with diversions to the inward Enugu lane for safer movement.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed urged motorists to remain cautious and use alternative routes for safer travel, while extending condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a swift recovery to the injured.
