A violent confrontation in Kebbi State has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals following a clash between members of the Mera community and a newly formed terrorist group known as Lakurawa, believed to be linked to ISIS’s Sahel operations.
The incident, reported by BBC Hausa, took place on Friday in Mera, a community within Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when Lakurawa members allegedly attempted to steal livestock from a local herder. The herder immediately alerted the Mera community, who mobilized to defend themselves, leading to a bloody encounter.
During the clash, 15 people were killed, while several others sustained injuries. The community members reportedly managed to kill some of the attackers, forcing the rest to retreat, taking their casualties with them.
In the aftermath, the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State visited Mera to offer condolences, accompanied by the state’s Commissioner of Police and the Emir of Argungu.
Abdullahi Idris Zuru, the governor’s media aide, confirmed the presence of Lakurawa in certain areas of Kebbi, assuring residents that authorities are taking steps to tackle the threat posed by the group.
