Ten suspended lawmakers from the Zamfara State House of Assembly have staged a protest in Abuja, condemning their suspension as unlawful and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Afripost, the lawmakers marched to the National Assembly, demanding intervention and seeking justice for what they described as an “illegal” suspension.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Ibrahim Tuku read a statement jointly signed by all the suspended lawmakers.
They argued that crucial decisions made by the remaining 14 members, including the passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, were invalid and should be nullified.
The group, consisting of six members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and four from the All Progressives Congress (APC), called for the National Assembly’s intervention to address the issue. They expressed hope that federal lawmakers would step in to resolve the crisis in Zamfara.
“We were unjustly suspended because we refused to be rubber stamps for the executive,” Tuku stated.
The lawmakers also demanded the reversal of the Zamfara Assembly’s decision to declare the seat of Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, vacant. Kagara represents the Talata-Mafara South State Constituency.
“We have submitted a petition to the National Assembly and were assured of an investigation, but we are yet to receive any response,” Tuku added.
The protest underscores the growing political tensions in Zamfara State, with the affected lawmakers continuing to press for national-level intervention.
