The Zamfara State House of Assembly has declared the seat of Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South Constituency, vacant.
The decision was taken on Tuesday during a plenary session, following a motion tabled by the Majority Leader, Hon. Bello Muhammad Mazawajje Tsafe.
This was confirmed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary of the Assembly, Bello Kurya.
Kurya revealed that Hon. Kagara had attended only 21 out of 180 sitting days, contravening the Nigerian Constitution and the Assembly’s standing rules, which mandate consistent participation in legislative proceedings.
The motion garnered support from several members, including Hon. Kabiru Mikailu Dangulbi (Maru South), Hon. Rilwanu Marafa Nagambo Anka (Anka), Hon. Ibrahim Garba Liman Fegin Mahe (Gusau II), and Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gummi (Gummi II), who stressed the importance of maintaining legislative discipline and integrity.
Nevertheless, Hon. Halliru Abdullahi Kuturu (Zurmi East) suggested alternative disciplinary measures.
Despite his proposal, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, announced the Assembly’s unanimous decision to declare the seat vacant, citing Sections 101 and 109(2) of the Nigerian Constitution as the legal foundation for their action.
The statement further disclosed that multiple committees had been set up to engage Hon. Kagara in efforts to resolve the issue amicably, but all attempts proved unsuccessful.
