Youth Leader Shot Dead by Cultists in Rivers Community

A former youth leader, Godspower Uwhetu, was shot dead in the early hours of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Odhiajie Community, located in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to local sources, the killing was carried out by a group of five suspected cultists believed to belong to the Iceland cult group. These individuals are reportedly loyal to the late cult leader, David Gift, known as 2Baba. The attackers, led by a man identified simply as Sam, broke into Uwhetu’s home around 1 am. They dragged him outside and shot him in front of his residence.

Before the incident, there had been tension between Uwhetu and Sam’s family. Reports say Sam’s mother accused Uwhetu of informing the military about her son’s whereabouts, leading to a raid. Following this confrontation, Uwhetu allegedly went into hiding, fearing for his life. He was said to have warned his friends that if anything happened to him, Sam should be blamed.

This killing adds to growing fear in the Igbu Akoh kingdom, where residents continue to live in constant worry over cult-related violence. Recent weeks have seen repeated shootings and destruction of property in nearby communities, including the vandalism of solar power installations in Odieke-Akoh.

Locals are calling on security agencies and the local government to take swift action to restore peace. They want the police, military forces, and community leaders to step in and bring those responsible to justice.

As of now, the Rivers State Police Command has not officially responded to the incident.
