The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed June 6 for the conduct of local government council elections across the 17 local government areas of the state.
The announcement was made in Damaturu by a Permanent Member of the commission, Mohammed Nguru, during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by security agencies, political party leaders and members of the media. He said the election timetable has the approval of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
Nguru explained that the planned polls are aimed at strengthening democratic governance at the grassroots, stressing that credible elections require the collective effort of all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies and the media.
He disclosed that the commission would soon issue detailed guidelines outlining procedures, timelines and requirements for political parties, urging them to comply fully. He added that parties are expected to present credible candidates whose leadership would positively impact service delivery and development at the local level.
According to him, chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while councillorship aspirants must be at least 25. He added that all candidates must be bona fide residents, possess a minimum of a school certificate, undergo security screening and pay nomination fees set at ₦300,000 for chairmanship, ₦250,000 for vice-chairmanship and ₦200,000 for councillorship positions. He assured residents that the elections would be free, fair, credible and peaceful.
