Professor Mahmood Yakubu has handed over the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission to May Agbamuche, who will now serve as the Acting National Chairman of the commission.
Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner at INEC, assumed the role following Yakubu’s handover during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
In his remarks, Yakubu urged all commissioners and directors to give their full support to Agbamuche until a substantive chairman is appointed. He expressed confidence in her ability to lead the commission effectively.
Yakubu, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and reappointed in 2020, supervised several major elections during his tenure, including the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
His exit marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s electoral history, with Agbamuche now expected to oversee preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
