Women in Rivers State took to the streets of Port Harcourt on Monday, April 14, 2025, to show support for the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as the state’s sole administrator and President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency.
The protest saw many women moving through major roads with placards and banners, chanting messages that backed the federal government’s actions. They also asked that past projects and contracts from the suspended administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara be carefully reviewed, claiming there were cases of inflated deals that needed to be looked into.
This show of support followed an earlier protest that took place three days before, where another group of women had gathered to oppose the emergency rule and demand Fubara’s return.
President Tinubu announced the emergency rule on March 18, 2025, due to ongoing political tensions and what he described as a breakdown of governance in Rivers State. The decision led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly.
Since taking over, Vice Admiral Ibas has made changes to the state’s leadership by suspending some officials and appointing new ones. The six-month emergency rule is expected to continue while the federal government manages the state’s affairs during the period of crisis.
