Why PDP National Convention May Not Hold – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cast doubt over the possibility of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holding its forthcoming national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Wike, speaking during his monthly media chat on Monday, said unresolved internal crises in the party could prevent the convention from taking place.

“The issue of the National Convention is not the problem, the issue is the problems leading to the convention and people should understand that,” he said.

According to him, while the choice of venue was not in dispute, the party must first resolve lingering issues, particularly concerning the Southeast and Ebonyi chapters. He revealed that the PDP had already set up a committee to look into the matter, with his own team scheduled to meet later on Monday.

“We are not contesting the venue of the convention. What we are saying is that the things leading to the convention—if they are not well taken care of—there are likelihood that the convention will not hold,” Wike explained.

He dismissed reports linking his concerns to a purported quarrel with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, insisting that the venue was not the subject of contention.

“The subject matter is: have you done what you are supposed to do before holding that convention? If you have not done it, it may be a setback,” he stated.

Wike noted that PDP had successfully held past conventions in different cities, including Port Harcourt and Abuja, stressing that the priority should be ensuring proper groundwork before the event.

He added that efforts were ongoing to resolve the grievances, saying: “From what I learnt, PDP has taken some steps to see that the issues are being resolved, and if resolved to the satisfaction of the complainants, no problem. But if they are not, of course they will take action.”
