The Federal Government has outlined plans to restore and modernize neglected federal buildings and assets in Lagos.
During a three-day assessment visit, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, inspected several facilities that have fallen into disrepair, including the old Federal Secretariat in Ikoyi and other key sites across the state.
The inspection revealed severe challenges such as lack of power, water, and overall maintenance. Many of these buildings, once hubs of federal operations, have been unused since the capital moved to Abuja in 1991.
Some properties, like the 60-bed hostel in Onikan and Eric Moore Housing in Surulere, were highlighted as requiring urgent attention.
Dangiwa announced a two-pronged approach: the federal government will directly fund upgrades for some properties, while others will involve private-sector investment. Collaborators will renovate and lease out the buildings, recovering costs before returning them to government control.
The minister also held discussions with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, leading to an agreement to form a tripartite committee for resolving mutual concerns.
This initiative aims to maximize the potential of the abandoned assets for the benefit of Lagos residents and federal workers.
The tour continues with visits to ongoing housing projects and further engagements with stakeholders.
