A plane carrying captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, has landed at Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York following a large-scale U.S. operation in Venezuela. Maduro is set to face drug and weapons charges in Manhattan federal court next week.
President Donald Trump outlined his plan for Venezuela, stating that the U.S. will “run the country” until a “judicious transition” can occur. He also announced that the U.S. will seize Venezuela’s massive oil reserves, recruiting American companies to overhaul the devastated industry and employing U.S. troops for security.
Regarding the uncertain political landscape, Trump informed reporters that the U.S. is working with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who has demanded Maduro’s release and insists he remains the country’s legitimate president. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, has called for an opposition candidate to assume power.
